A call to action this week as the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, refers to the IPCC climate change report as a “Code Red” for humanity. In the words of Taoiseach, Micheál Martin: “The time to act is now”
Over a 10-year period, the EcoMerit Community has achieved average emissions reduction of over 60% (or more than 9% annually) saving thousands of tonnes of carbon and exceeding Ireland’s annual target of 7% as per the recent Climate Action Bill. (https://ecomerit.ie/performance/). In addition to this extraordinary emissions result, average cost savings for each member were over €10,000 in their first year of membership alone, with ongoing savings across the membership amounting to millions of euros over 10 years.
So we know that effective climate action is possible because we’ve seen it first-hand in this Community of ours, so well done to everyone who has made this success story a reality.
But why stop there? To meet the challenges of this Climate Crisis head on, we must use every tool at our disposal. Any and every form of engagement is encouraged and appreciated, from social media networking to good old-fashioned word of mouth conversations. The larger the EcoMerit grows, the bigger the impact we can have on Climate Change; we hope to one day see the Irish Economy as a whole reach the level of environmental performance that you as a Community have shown to be possible.
The Climate Crisis is at a tipping point, the science is irrefutable. But with committed action from all sectors of society, we can truly make a difference
